The Mothman

 The Mothman is a humanoid creature described by witnesses as having large wings with at least a ten foot span, and piercing red eyes. 


Many reports have also described it as having little to no head. Over the years the Mothman has been sighted all over the world, generally months, weeks, days, or even hours before a catastrophe. The first known sighting was on November 12, 1966, and the most recent sighting was on March 10, 2014. Many people have connected the Mothman to UFOs due to increased reports of strange lights that coincide with reported sightings.

The first documented sighting was on November 12, 1966, in Point Pleasant, when five men were digging a grave at a nearby cemetery. The men claimed they saw a man-like figure flying low over the trees above their heads. That same week, two couples reported what they said was “a large flying man whose eyes glowed red” following their car in an area outside a former World War II munitions plant. 

Over the next year reports flooded in. On December 15, 1997, at 5:05 pm, the Silver Bridge collapsed, killing 46 people. Many people claimed to have seen the Mothman on and around the bridge just hours before the tragedy. After the tragedy, reports came to an abrupt halt. However, the town of Point Pleasant remembers the moth-like creature very well. Statues and festivals have been dedicated to the creature.

Another wave of sightings occurred in 1986 at Chernobyl, Ukraine, just before the catastrophic nuclear disaster. Many witnesses described seeing a creature with no head, piercing red eyes and a massive wing span. Although the sightings were nowhere near the magnitude of the reports in Point Pleasant, the creature left a lasting impression on the people of Chernobyl, as it was later dubbed “The Black Bird of Cherynobyl.” 

Many people have also claimed to see the Mothman just weeks before the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. One man in particular, named Marcus Pules, was visiting Japan on business. Pules met up with an old friend, known only as Tim, and they went out to get a bite to eat. They stopped at a nearby power plant because Tim was a teacher and needed to check on some graduate students who had set up a biology station. They heard a loud WOOSH followed by an ear piercing screech. They looked up, and on top of a nearby building, saw a large black creature with glowing, blood red eyes. The creature took flight, circled several times, then finally flew away. They later discovered the building the creature was on contained the reactors. 

The most recent sighting was on March 10, 2014, in Greeley, Colorado, when a man named K. Brown was helping his son clear out his attic. Brown went into the attic and heard what he described as chattering teeth and footsteps. He aimed his flashlight toward the sound. He then yelled out for his son to come and see. Brown’s son rushed through the attic door and saw a black figure “crawling like a baby” on the floor. The creature stood up, its head touching the ceiling, then it ran through the solid wall and disappeared. The men described the creature as 7 feet tall, with “tons of fingers, with claws,” piranha like teeth and jet black eyes. The men noted the creature greatly reminded them of the Mothman. Brown and his son fear what may come next.
